well this last weekend i took the bike for a short ride after doing a bunch of stuff to get it up and running, just wanted to try it out. here is my problem...:

i cannot start the bike when its in gear, with the clutch pulled in. i see a pressure switch connected to it, and i have the same stuff on my quads that allow it to be started when its not in gear.

should i be able to start it in gear, while the clutch is pulled, or am i just hoping for it to work that way?

That IS what the clutch lever switch is for; but they do fail with great regularity. Replacement is cheap. Make sure it's simply not unplugged (in the headlight shell) first.

...or save yourself some time and work and just start it in neutral.

It should start in gear- if the kickstand isn't down, and the clutch is pulled..
Might sound dumb... but also check the KICKSTAND switch. Mine sticks pretty regularly... you didn't mention if you rode it anywhere since "doing a bunch of stuff to get it up and running"...

It's important to fix. If you stall in traffic you don't want to be hunting for neutral to get it started - you just want to go.

good catch, i didnt say if i rode it yet.....

well i guess it depends on what you consider riding?

i did ride it around the neighborhood.... but i dont ride too far, just a few blocks for now. i just got it running, and have FINALLY decided to keep it. i dont know what it is, but i love this thing!

the reason i didnt ride it far is because i dont have my motorcycle endorsement yet, nor do i have gear. after i got it running, i rode it for about a mile, and it was about 30 degrees outside........ brrr.......

I got the clutch lever switch for about $13 at my local yamaha dealer. Took 2 minutes to replace. Well worth replacing.
