I am in need of the rubber grommets that hold the side covers on for a 81' xj650 maxim. Hopefully someone knows where I can get them or a alternative.
    Thanks

    True Value or ACE Hardware.

    ACE being he best bet.
    Hardware Section.
Pull-out Drawers with Pictures of Contents.

    Ask a new kid.
They have to be able to tell you where anything is on the floor before graduating from back-room and unloading.

Get "real" ones from XJ4Ever. Don't take a chance on losing a RH cover.

The Grommet's in the selection at a Franchise ACE Hardware store might prove be a better alternative that what you'd get at the Dealer.

It's possible to find an exceptional replacement :
    • Tighter-fitting
    • "Slightly" larger OD
    • "Slightly" smaller ID

The Side Cover will fit on more snugly and won't vibrate in the slightest.
They'll only require you to pay for the Grommet.
No charge for a bag and label.

....until the tighter grommet causes you to pull harder and then break the battery side cover causing you to curse and swear at someone who suggested buying the incorrect grommets and then having to go buy a replacement right side cover at ridiculous prices causing you to wish you got the correct grommet in the first place.

Correct. The Yamaha "grommets" aren't just grommets; they're a proprietary profile designed to guide and "capture" the pegs on the side cover.

The correct replacements are inexpensive, and cheap insurance.

Grease the "bullet" to help prevent breakage.

I've also sanded away (rounded) the back edge on a particularly tight bullet to match the "feel" of others.

I hand fabbed a new set by cutting down, drilling out and spinning up some stoppers on my drill press, shaping them with a file as i went. Came out great and got r grommets out of 2the stoppers i had laying around.

Not that Yamaha has a patent on them
Honda 83551-300-000 originally for the 1969 cb750 is identical to the Yamaha 90480-01401-00 And within .05$ in price both under $3 each.
And can be ordered from Honda car dealer as well.
Ps the Honda one is on the right
