Sketchy shifting?

A new XJ rider's question on shifting: at my motorbike course, they teach slow-speed manoeuvring (in 1st gear) using a combination of rear brake, clutch, and throttle – basically, rear brake to stabilize the bike, and then adjusting the throttle and slipping the clutch to control speed. When I tried that on this bike, as I slipped the clutch, you could feel a “clunk-clunk-clunk-clunk,” and if I didn’t let the brake off, the bike would stall…is that sketchy, or is it just how the bike works given age/size (I took my course using the safety council's 2007 Honda CB150's, so obviously handling will be different!!)?

Also – a bit sketchy gearing down a couple of times...it would get stuck in second as I was gearing down approaching a light/corner, and it was hard to get it into first – once it got stuck in neutral, and I had to roll the throttle on before I could shift down into first. Again, sketchy, or just the temperament of the bike?

    PS - I am riding an '83 Maxim 400...
