So due to an unfortunate string of events, my 1981 XJ550 Maxim has an unrepairable gas tank.

Someone tried to steal the project bike from my garage and absolutely ruined the tank in the process.

I am searching for another tank for the bike, and was wondering if there are any other models or tanks that fit nicely in terms of the rubber mounting nubs up front. I am fine modifying the length of the mounting bracket to accommodate a longer or shorter tank. I have search the forums but was able to find no clear answer. Any feedback or advice is greatly appreciated.

On another note if you have a maxim tank or something else let me know! I will post on the wanted sections as well.

    Thanks in advance.

So sorry to here about you bike.
only the maxim tank fits, I have put the 550 seca tank on my maxim but the rear mount goes about 1-1/2 inches past the mounting bolt. you would need to fab a plate to secure the rear hold down mount
seca tank and seat on maxim

That's great news but other than the mounting plate the tank fits on just fine?

yes bars do not hit tank , you can see in the photos its location, if you remove the reflectors the tank will go forward more but then the triple tree will hit the tank. where my finger is pointing the tank rests in the reflector mount
you could just bolt a flat bar stock to the current mount and run it back to seca tank mounting hole you can see the back of the max mount in the photo

they do weld pins to the dents and pull them it might be cheaper to fix than buy if you strip the paint off
try a quote from local MC repair shop or auto body shop

Too far gone, more than simple dents. Completely tweaked and also a hole about 1/8" diameter in on of the side dents. The tried to drag the bike because it had a wheel lock.

I hate theives, and if they happen to catch them the punishment is never harsh enough to discourage others from attempting to do such crimes. Hope you can find another tank.

Yes that is toast.. eBay or a cycle salvage time.. You can try Cycle-Recycle2 in Indianapolis In 317-634-7550 he has tons on salvaged bike parts. You should get to beat the thieves with a wiffle ball bat!

It'd be more satisfying to beat them with the part they ruined. I wonder what a tank would sound like going upside the thief's head? And consider yourself lucky, Razz1969 has a whole pile of parts to bash his would-be thief with!
