How does one make the 82 550 maxim a soft tail. What parts are used and how complicated is this project? Thanks ahead.

Not quite sure what you're getting at here, are you wanting to get rid of the external shocks, but still keep the suspension in the rear? If so, that's going to be a pretty involved project with plenty of fabrication and welding. If that's what you're after, you might look around for an XS400 rear section, or certain Virago's, as they had a monoshock underneath the seat. Also probably going to have to relocate the battery and some fuses/wiring.

was thinking something like this. The owner is sending me details on the project soon. It seems that the rear of the frame was cut but it was cut after the shocks. It looks like a bracket to hold the tail would need to be welded and a custom seat. Doesnt look too hard and the outcome is amazing.

Ah, I see! Yes, that frame was cut right after the rear shocks. What I would do is find the seat/fender combo that you want, and get them both so they'll match up nicely. Custom bracket for the fender, a few custom brackets for the seat, and make sure to cross-brace between the shock mounts since you just cut off the rest of the rear frame! Very nice looking bike IMHO... :D
