Softail bobber possibilities?

    Hey guys, I love the look of hard tails but want to see if I can modify it for a more comfortable ride. I love the stance of the hard tails so I was wondering if something like this is possible on a shaft driven bike like an XJ with the shock being under the seat of the bike. I know the spring tension angles are not the same but I am no engineer but looks like it should work. If it is possible do you think I would just have to weld the shock to the rear fender and to a support bracket at the base of the tank? I dont think the rear fender is thick enough to support that much tension, however, if I weld a bar in there to not only hold the rear fender but also the shock that might work right? Has anyone on here ever attempted anything like this? Thanks for all your help.

    I also have heard of something called the harley softail rocker system. It looks like the shocks (more like springs) are on the bottom of the frame to pull the wheel back down and the pivot point is attached right below the seat. I would prefer the shock attached to the rear fender due to the simplicity to achieve (or at least appears to be).

    Yes I did see a mod where the rider used a short arm welded to the bottom of the swingarm with a shock (stiffer one) mounted under the engine. It keeps it simple and out of the way. Of course you would lose your center stand with this mod, but sometimes yo have to make sacrifices to get what you want. You'd have to experiment with with shock rates to get it just right of course.
    I tossed the idea around in my head for awhile, but just decided to shorten my shocks instead, which worked out very well for me. Solid struts for me didn't work out so good and sucked for any meaningful riding distance.

    Why would I lose my center stand? It looks like it would be right before the swing arm. Or maybe I could relocate it. What shock would work well for this kind of mod? I would need something twice as stiff as the stock shocks in order to accomodate the stresses involved.

    Yes, you'd need a very stiff shock to replace the stock units, that's for sure. There's not alot of room between the front of the swingarm and the back of the engine, where I'd put the shock. I didn't want to remove the airbox so running the shock at a 45 degree angle toward the back of the tank wasn't an option for me. That's the way I've seen it done on other bikes.
