I used to own an '82 650 Maxim a couple of years back. Consequently I sold it for some rather stupid reasons, and regret it a lot. I'm looking to get a 750 Seca sometime later this summer for commuting to/from work and such.

My question: How much do they normally run. Given I'm not looking for a beauty queen, just something that will run reliably that I can work on in my free time, what would a fair price be? I likely won't be seriously looking until late July/early August.

I paid $950.00 on ebay for mine but it was a electrical nightmare. I did get it straighten out finally $300.00 later not to mention all the aggravation I went through. Just be careful what you buy. My seller said it was in perfect condition ( yeah Right)

A lot is going to depend on condition - my 650 had no exterior rust anywhere, manifolds and boots soft and like new, paint great with minor dings, serviceable tires (about 3k left on rear) and ran like a top - I gave $1000 gladly. The rest is going to be the market in your area.

You can pay 200 to 2000 - you have to decide what it's worth really. Check the market carefully so you know the values - do your homework and let us know what you found!

Buy one in good shape and look foreward to some minor repairs or go my route and get a bargin at 100 bucks: but be willing to put a lot of time into replacing all rubber, all fluids, brakes, plugs, seat, seals, battery, and last but not least get real friendly with the carbs. Sounds like a lot but this way your money is spent on one piece at a time and not ploping down a grand or so. But if you have the cash and want to ride soon get a good runner and try before you buy.
Oh, and buy with your head and not your heart
    good luck

Paid $800 for mine and needed $500 in work minimum. Ran OK not great. Just be sure and let her run for about 20 minutes. Make sure idle is still good. Check breaks. Lift up the seat and check to see if wiring is rigged or good. Look at the frame and make sure it is fairly rust free. Of course check and make sure engine seals look like they are not leaking.

Little things that take tons of time! Have fun riding!!
