What is the proper gap for my '85? I did a search, but could only find one reference...it said .8mm. The old spark plugs were all gapped to .4mm, and they were filthy 8O .

Is this gap the same for all xj's?

Not necessarily; not all XJs run the same plugs, stock. Some have 12mm plugs, some 14mm plugs, different specs.

That being said, I'm willing to bet that 0.7mm~0.8mm is good for your bike too.

0.4mm is way too tight for pretty much anything.
