Has anyone ever experimented with using a different heat range spark plug on the XJ.

Many have - but for the most part unless you've made some serious modifications to your engine it's at best unnecessary, and at worse damaging. (think hole burned in piston)
Best ignition improvements for our XJ's so far seems to be replacement coils/wires, and Iridium plugs.

In the following link select "Power Sport" from the drop-down menu in the top left under "Find Your Parts", then continue from there. It will guide you through to everything that's available for your bike. If it doesn't show an Iridium plug at the end, then it's not available, which is true for a couple of models.

Hotter Plugs WILL NOT 'Hole yr Pistons' Urban myth.. Read even the basic Plug info on the NGK site. it's educational :-0
Why you actually need hotter plugs is a different issue.

Actually, they'll contribute to major combustion-pocket unhappiness if you use a plug that's several heat ranges too warm, and jet too lean/use too much advance/too much WFO throttle despite the warnings of audible detonation.

That all said, I'm also curious as to why the OP is seeking a plug with a different heat range.

I usually stick with original plugs, unless it burns some oil, like my goldwing on startup, then I go one heat range higher, like ngk it calls for is a 8 I'll use a 7 and that seems to do the trick. But if your bikes running good don't mess with it.
