    I have been reading and have notice that here and there, a special tool is needed for a procedure. I have a good assortment of metric tools. What are the most needed special tools??

    Also,

    The PO gave me the Haynes manual with the bike (82 xj650) What other tech docs would be adviseable?

    Thanks - David

    Personally I prefer the Clymer manuals. They still don't cover everything but in my experience they don't leave as much out as the Haynes.

    You can get everything your looking for from Chacal, Just PM him.

    The Metric allen sockets sure make it fast and easy. You can usually pick up a cheap set at HarborFreight.

    And Yes, the hand impact you strike with a hammer.

    one of my personal favorites:

    The RickCoMatic patented hammer handle pry bar. Get a replacement hammer handle from the hardware store, and saw off the slotted part where the head is supposed to go on. Smooth off the edges, and you have a very handy tool for:

    prying loose a rack o'carbs;
    popping off a stuck valve cover;
    separating your rear wheel from the final drive;

    and any other prying/wedging that requires strength from a non-marring tool. I actually have two, a big one and a smaller one.

    and:

    KROIL. http://www.kanolabs.com/google/ No mechanic's tool kit is complete without it. It honestly and truly makes all other penetrants obsolete. It will work when all others fail. You NEED this stuff to work on an XJ.

    OOPS, missed the second part of your question.

    Haynes manual ok; I have a Clymer for my 550s and IT also leaves a lot to be desired.

    Find a factory service manual. chacal offers reprints I do believe, or you can troll eBay they pop up all the time. I got my 550 factory book for $15, complete with grubby fingerprints and coffee stains.

    Don't get me wrong; the factory books leave stuff out too. The combination of the factory book and a Haynes or Clymer is the best way to go. Plus this site.

    You can also order the XJCD but unless you print it out or have a PC in your shop it's inconvenient (for me anyway.) Lots of good info on it though.

    Valve Shim Exchange tool- - 6 inches of 12/2 electrical with the last 5/8 inch bent over, stuck thru the plug hole, then above the valve.

    Manometer- - Make a water filled 4 tube (trust me :wink: )

    Don't forget the restrictors.

    IF the 82 650 is an RJ (seca) he doesn't need the YICS blanking tool as that is a non-YICS engine.

    I tabulated all the tools I wanted for just the fuel section off of XJForever.......$606.00 - More than I paid for the two bikes!!!AAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!! I wonder how much he would discount if I ordered it all at once.........
