After a spill on my 82 xj 750 I am changing over my damaged instrument cluster which had a non working speedo in it with another I purchased on ebay, i have found the speedo I purchased has had wires cut and I am now trying to make one out of two. My questions are my old speedo was a 120kl hr unit and my new one is a 220kl hr unit which I will be putting in the old case, there is a small pickup that ran on the 120kl speedo that is not in the case of the 220k do I leave it in or disconect it? also should I oil anything on the speedo before I install it? Also I was trying to change the panel cover on the lcd and when removing the backing plate I noticed the relay strip was coming off so I just put it back together and was wondering if it will still work.

    Thanks in advance Graham

Look down at the back of the speedo there is a drum ( gimble) take a good oil with PB blaster or WD 40 with a red straw spray this down ,the stub where speedo connects do the same . Take a Q tip put a little white lithium grease and apply a little to the gears . Try not to touch speedo face you don't want finger prints . While your at this pull speedo cable out and grease this as well. Not sure about the KPH as we use MPH here ,I think without looking at mine 120KPH equals our dreaded 85 MPH speedo , I would caution against trying to swap face plates as pulling speedo needle could bend or damage shaft . Cheers

I was swapping the whole speedo, and yes it was the 85mph/120kph speedo that had seized, swapping it out for the 220kph unit. What I am unsure of, is what is the small pickup that runs on the spinning drum on the back of the speedo I cant find it listed in the parts diagrams so I don't know what it is for, so do I disconnect it when running the 220kph unit?

That small reed switch sends a signal to the auto-canceling unit for the turn signals. Without it you'll be left with the signals only auto-canceling based on time, but not on distance traveled. It's absence might disable the auto-cancel entirely, but I don't think that it will.

Assuming the canceling unit works the sames as on a 650 Maxim, it will disable the auto cancel as canceling occurs when both conditions are met. This prevents the light from cancelling while sitting at a light as the timer will expire but since you haven't traveled any distance yet they will remain on until you travel the preset distance. The opposite is true when travelling at speed i.e. lane change, you will hit the distance requirement fairly quickly therefore the timer will keep the light on for a preset amount of time. I don;t recall the exact distance or times but I have it all somewhere from previous testing.

Thanks. I couldn't remember if you found that a single condition would work or not. I think the distance is 280 feet or therabouts.

Thanks guys I will be using my old casing which has the reed switch in it, I am hoping that the 220kph speedo will work with the reed switch the same time and distance as the 120kph/85mph speedo that I am replacing it with
