I have found two leaks on my xj 550. One is the speedometer cable. I would like to know if the speedometer is difficult to take off and check, is there a seal in there that could be replaced.
The other is on the left front wing of the head cover. I replaced the gasket. The old one was a little brittle, the new, soft and pliable. The leak is in two spots. The same spots before I changed the gasket.
I did notice that when I tighten down the two headcover bolts, that they come to a dead stop. So I am wondering if someone drilled them out before and either did not go deep enough or left debris in there.

    Thoughts and opinions are appreciated.

leak at the speedometer or the front wheel ? whats leaking? look at the cable there may be orings in both ends

head cover bolts could be the donuts have dried out and shrunk or you need to chase the threads with a bottom tap or thread restoring tap .
use a drill bit and see how deep the hole is compared to screw length.

The leak of the speedometer is where it attaches to the engine. I will upload a picture.

I wiped the leak off before I thought of taking the picture. But it is on the outer part where you grip it to screw it on.

That is your tachometer cable. There is an oil seal and an o-ring that wear out and will cause the engine oil to leak. Start a conversatoon with Chacal to get replacement seals.

Here is the how-to writeup: http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/posts/164299/

As mentioned the valve cover is held down by a set of rubber doughnuts. The bolts have a shoulder on them that set the depth of the bolt into the head. DO NOT TRY TO TIGHTEN THEM BEYOND BEING FULLY SEATED AND SNUG OR THEY WILL TEAR OUT THE THREADS. Your rubber doughnuts will need to be replaced. Chacal has those too, along with the installation tool.

I finally got around to doing this job today. Followed the procedure and it went smoothly. As was stated, Chacal provides the right parts. Everything seems to work good.
