    Got the bike running pretty good so I thought it would be a good time to do the wheel bearings and headset bearings before it warms up. So I do the wheels, pull the fork apart(pain in the arse) grease the bone dry bearings and put it back together. While I had the gages off I removed the bezel to clean some nasty looking stuff from the inside of the glass. Got it clean, put it back on and while I was putting the front brake lever on I dropped a wrench and cracked the glass on the speedo :cry: :x :x . Is there a rplacement available or do I have to go to a glass shop and how does the glass come out of the bezel. I tried a bunch of different searches and nothing came up.

    We're in similar boat.

    There was dirt on the inside of my tach bezel. I decided to pull apart.

    There is a ring on the back of the bezel - a section through it looks like this:

    |||.................................................................|||
    |||] [X]_________________________[X] [|||
    |||][===========================][|||
    ||||||||......................................................|||||||

    [X] is the ring
    [======] is the bezel
    |||| is the body of the trim.

    Turns out the tach bezel had been replaced with plexiglass - and not sealed. The dirt was between the bezel and the mask behind it so I decided to try and pull it apart.

    I was able to use a very fine screwdriver worked in between the ring and the trim body at numerous places around the joint to kind of break the adhesive free. I would then tap sharply around the bezel with the end of my finger to work loose (I also used a rubber mallet a bit).

    I finally got it worked loose. Cleaned the plexiglass, put a thin bead of black RTV to seal to the trim. Placed 1 drop of modeling cement in 4 places before snapping the retaining ring back in. I under glued because I plan on someday putting glass in.

    The Yamaha part has the entire trim, both bezels and the indicator light lenses between them and goes for about $50.

    Also have toyed with buying a used cluster on eBay to harvest the trim and lenses.

    I suspect your local glass shop could cut one easy enough.

    If you end up replacing the assembly shoot me a PM and I'll buy that tach bezel off you.

    I have an '83 750 Maxim. The PO gave me a box of stuff with it when I bought it and in that box is a new cover (the plastic housing and the glass) for the gauges. He bought it because the tach doesn't work (needle is sluggish and the light doesn't work) but I'm fairly positive I'll be able to take the front off and repair the tach without destroying the front or glass. So I have a brand new cover with the glass in it if it's the same size/shape as what either of you need.

    I stoped by Pat Catans-my local craft supply store today and spoke with the custom frame maker. She said to bring the bezel, retaining ring, gasket, and cracked glass and she can cut a piece of glass that will fit with the circle cutter for probably ten bucks or so. Kind of makes my boneheaded mistake hurt less. :D :D
