    Hey!

So a while ago i had seen fitz say something about how his speedometer made a screeching/howling/high pitched noise.

happens in the lower speeds, but i have to be in 3rd gear to hear it as otherwise the engine noise covers it up.

anyway, fitz had said it came from the speedo.

i was wondering which part/s would need to be lubed/cleaned for this noise to go away. i know fitz has a tutorial, but idk how far i need to disassemble it as well as what exactly needs to be attended to.

    Thanks!!!

I just pulled the cable & shot WD40 up in there, don't overdo it.

You might start by READING the tutorial; all of that is covered.

WD40 is not a good lube and will gum up, and actually draw true lubricant out of parts and dry it up.

I recommend Tri-Flow as a lubricant; again, that's covered in the tutorial.

There are three parts to the speedo drive:

    -The gearbox at the wheel

    -The cable

    -The instrument itself.

Of those three, the gearbox at the wheel rarely needs attention. You need to clean/lube your cable; and/or attend to the instrument itself.

ACCESS to the "guts" of the instruments differs from bike to bike; have a look at the fiche for your bike under "meter" for an exploded view: http://www.yamahapartshouse.com/home.aspx#

If your bike has "canned" insstruments, full access to the innards requires some minor surgery in the way of slicing open the plastic inner "can." However, it is possible to lubricate the input shaft bushing (the usual cause of the screaming) without such drastic measures.

Again, this is covered in my tutorial. http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15303.html Tenth photo illustrates where to lube the input bushing.

Fitz's method is clearly the proper way to solve the problem.... I went the wizard route though, only I used white lithium grease, also lubed the cable, problem patched

It doesn't hurt to replace the 30yo speedo cable as well.
I had the same problem, it was so loud people would stare as I rolled by.
Fitz's write up + new cable = quiet.

Seconded. Lubing the cable didn't help in my case; had to go into the guts, although I didn't have Tri-Flow to use. I think I used Zep 45 instead.
