I have the XJ650 with a major issue with the speedometer. I can tell its way off. Cause i can get down the road and the bike vibrates its between 65-75. However it only reading it at 45. Tach is at around 4-5k in 5th gear. I had to replace old speedo cause it didint work anymore. The replacement speedo is suppose to be brand new. I am not sure if it was sold to me broken cause it was off ebay. The ebay speedo was for a 550 hope it wasnt wrong part. They looked similar so i bought it since it was discounted.

Dont know where to start with this issue. HELP!!!! Dont need a ticket over this.

P.S. It officially sucks restoring a bike after an accident. This thing is costing too much to repair.

Im guessing the ratio is wrong. You need something in the 2240rpm to 60mph catagory.

If the speedo you got from eBay was for a YAMAHA 550, the ratio is the same.

There are three major components to your speedometer: The instrument itself (mechanical, and subject to failure/need for lubrication) the cable (subject to failure, needs to be regularly cleaned/lubed) and the speedo drive unit at the front wheel (also needs to be periodically flushed out/lubed.)

Speedo, cable, drive gear unit. You'll need to clean/lube and inspect all 3.

Is there a way to tell which are at fault? Also what type of oil should be used on those 3 parts?

I'm having the same issue on my 750 Seca. Speedo reads about half of the speed I am actually going. I just flushed, cleaned, and re-lubed the speedo gear and the cable. They seem to be in excellent condition.

On top of that, my trip odometer does not move at all. From the outside, the dash seems to be in good, working order - even though it is old and faded.

Some help here would be greatly appreciated. I am willing to open the dash, but would like some info concerning what I should see and what I should look for to solve this issue.

Fitz is spot on. Check, clean, lube all three components.

If you are getting parts, make sure they are from same mak(e/model year.

Ive heard of lazy magnetics on spedometers, that my be my issue, the odometer is spot on, and I cleaned andlubed all components. My Speedo.is about 15 mph off. I pulled the cluster apart, and noticed on the 82 750, the odo is directly coupled to the cable gear, whereas the Speedo is magnetically coupled to the gear.

Was that dry lube or a wet lube you used in the write-up? I am not familiar with that brand.

It's wet lube, you can get it at Grainger, that's where I found it, they have a thousand locations around the US, sure there is one close to you. You are best served by ordering online first and setting up an account there, then will call pick up.

I also found it at my local ACE hardware, my local store is about 3x the size of an average small-town hardware store, though :)

    It's Tri-Flow Industrial Lube

I've followed Fitz's instructions but unfortunately my speedo acts slow still.

I do wonder if my worm gear on wheel hub is from a different model bike, the PO seemed to patch some things together...
