So on my way to work this morning I heard this "whining sound" I slowed down sound didn't change. Pulled in the clutch revd the engine a couple times same sound no difference. This continued until I pulled in the parking lot and got below 5mph. I eliminated everything that it could be with exception of the speedo. My question is can a person spray some lube of some sort in there through the hole where the cable attaches or do I need to disassemble it and go that route

Spraying lube in the hole will temporally fix the problem but will cause the gears to gum up faster. Been there done that. Take it apart and clean it properly and lube the cable is the best way to fix the problem. Getting a NOS Speedometer is the next best fix (usually much more expensive unless you get lucky).

Ah, the sound of the 700 speedo death scream. Mine does that when ever it is below 60 degrees and I go over 53. It will stop when I get under 15mph, the needle gives a tiny little ump' when it starts , and a slightly larger jump when it stops.

As long as the temp is above 60 it doesn't Do it.

Yep that's exactly how it's doing hog. Quite annoying especially when you first hear it. With the helmet on it first sounded like it was coming from the ass end of the bike. Thanks tcoup I'll tear into it this weekend.
