Your instrument cluster comes apart, you can "service" the instruments.

Once inside, here's what you'll find: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15303.html Be careful not to take them too far apart.

You can often find new, NOS instrument "guts" on eBay; I've seen both tachs and speedos for the 550 Maxims lately. They generally go for around $80; which is a lot better than the $149 or so that they list for.

That's if you can't clean and lube yours and get it working as in my article.

As for the odometer: it is VERY easy to change the mileage on a Yamaha speedometer. However, since it's also illegal, I won't post the procedure. If and when you get to that point, PM me and we'll take it off the forum.

My instrument cluster broke too. It was humming for awhile, then nothing!

    Any suggestions?

Could be your cable snapped. Mine was whining just recently, I took it apart. I couldn't even turn the speedo gear with my hand it was so gummed up. If yours is like that, the cable might have been under too much strain. But clean and lube it first. You can check your cable by unhooking it from the instrument, then get the front wheel off the ground and spin it. You should see the other end spinning in there.

You could check with XJ4Ever and see what he has in new and "pre-owned."

Or, I can provide you with a couple of NOS sources but they're beaucoup expensive...
