    Spin on oil filter sounds great, but what about the vulnerability of the exposed filter to stones kicked up by the front tire. I'd hate to be out in the country and have the filter punctured and leaking oil and not knowing it until I hear the sound of the engine change

    to give you a better idea on the ammount of force required to puncture it you might ought to take a flat object and tap the filter .... thats about the equivalent to a small to medium rock hitting it. in order to puncture it you would have to have somthing pretty significant hit it at a high velocity .... so if somone was shooting rocks at your bike i think you have a different problem all together... that that point you need that XJ military chopper bobber i saw on here a few wks ago and some armored plating. :D

    The filter on my 98 camaro sticks right out into the airflow below the car, gets pelted by rocks and such all the time. Hardly even scratches.

    chacal sells the spin on oil filter adapter for are XJ's, first hand experience with one is that its pretty slick to install. Chacal has full written instructions for the install that are easy to follow. It cost like 55 dollars, but believe me its worth it.

    HCP1284PL Aftermarket SPIN-ON OIL FILTER CONVERSION KIT, with a Purolator Pure-One mini-can filter. Each:
    $ 54.95

    +1 for Chacal's adaptor.

    I had never done an oil change before but I had no problem changing the oil and installing the adaptor. Total time was probably about an hour for me.

    I wonder if the spin-on adapter would work with an aftermarket oil cooler, like a Derale. has anyone tried this combination?

    Now that you guys mention the strength of the filter casing, I remember one time having to drive a screwdriver into an automotive filter to turn it off because the wrench I had at the time was slipping. The outer casing was pretty tough.
    I'm going to buy the kit with the chrome K&N filter because it looks nice.
