I purchased a nice low mileage (just turned 11,000 miles this week) '82 XJ750 in Feb. I last owned a motorcycle back in 1982, so it's like I picked up where I left off.
Anyhow, after reading numerous posts here, I decided this weekend to replace the oil, filter, and rear drive oil. I also need to tackle the fork seals, but that will come later.
I was able to remove the oil drain plug, but the oil filter cover bolt is so tight, my socket began to slip on the bolt. I've ordered a new bolt this morning, but I need suggestions on how to remove the old one. It's not completlely rounded, so I'm thinking a vice-grip tool may work. Suggestions?
Also, the rear drive drain screw is also really tight (previous owner or mechanic apparently didn't own a torque wrench).
I'm thinking I can use a hypodermic type tool to draw the gear oil out thru the filler hole- does that sound plausible??
    Thanks in advance-

You can try tapping on them with a hammer lightly, sometimes this will jar the threads loose.
Also get your self a good 6 point socket, they are harder to round off, and will get a much better grip on the bolt.
Good luck and post some pics of your new ride.

Hello Flat, your bolt should come out with the previously mentioned 6 point socket and whack. Failing that, you may give the vise grip twist, but I'm betting it won't help. I had the same problem and simply cut a slot on the remaining stub with a hack saw and removed it that way. If that fails, you may need to get the old hammer and chisel and tap on the flange untill you budge it. DON'T hammer on it, you can just as easily bugger up the machined surface behind the flange, be thoughtful in applying the whacks. I ended up using a reverse twist drill bit and an easy out on my other bike. Takes a bit of work, but you can do it.

Stripped bolt removers -- they work. They look like a socket with left handed flutes cut on the inside rather than flats. They cut into the metal and you can twist anything out. Put it on - give it a medium whack with a hammer, and gently turn it out -- no problem

You can get them lots of places - Sears / Craftsmen makes them too (that's what I have).
