I bought my first bike last winter (1982 XJ750 Seca), rode it all spring/summer and now I am fixing/cleaning it up over the winter. I just purchased a headlight assembly from an 81 550 maxim off e-bay. I want to convert it from a sealed bulb to a halogen H4 set-up and then replace the square headlight.

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

If I can find it I will link the eBay seller I got mine from. Nice and cheap (OEM quality). But very slow communication seller.

Seller rimiinc. If he still has best offer ask full price plus extra bulb.

I bought the euro kit, which is legal for motorcycles.

Thanks Metal_Bob, I found a couple items from that seller that look like would work. One question, did you have any electrical load issues when you installed the light....I am afraid of overloading the system. I have heard that these H4 conversions pull less amps than the stock sealed square, don't know if this is true tho.

I believe it's a 1:1 watt swap. You just get to pic the lens/reflector style and bulb color. You can easily store spare bulb vs. Large sealed bulb.

However stick with 55/60w bulbs. 100w not good for us and you'd barely notice it. Loss of voltage theory or something. And might melt wires and housing!

I got a bright white NOT blue bulb.

P.s. the h4 conversions tend to be brighter/better because of better/newer reflector shapes.

I put a pair of 65-100 watt in my fzr that really lit up the road. Back in the early 80s i never noticed how bad the rectangle lights must be had a maxim and seca 750 and a 900 seca . I hear people complaining about them all the time now

Keep in mind some of these square lights are 30 years old as well as the glass housing.

I also think more people live AWAY from the city now and notice/care about how dim the lights are compared to other vehicles. I also think the "reflective powder" on the street lines are less reflective and/or less powder than years ago.

I swear just 20 years ago when I started to drive, the white lines/dashes lit up great at night even when raining. NOW I can barely see some of the brand new/redone lines on a DRY NIGHT (just forget about in in bad weather).

EDIT: ^^^^ I feel so old... Back in my day... "I was the remote!!!" (Really I was  )

From what i herd doesn't a round headlamp light up the road better? you have more reflective area. Strange thing is 87 when i bought my fzr you didnt see bikes with duel Headlamps. I got pulled over 1 night had to prove it to the idiot cop that my high beams were not on he thought it was like a car duh

Thats the same kit I just put in. I offered him a few bucks less than his asking price. He responded and shipped quickly for me. Its wicked easy to change it out no pics because it was to bright in the barn today to show the difference in how well they light everything up.
