I have an 83 xj750 maxim. It runs fine sometimes, but then other times ill be riding on the highway or even sometime not even 20 miles an hour, and it will just randomly shut off on me. I try to pop the gear but it doesn't start until I pull over, pop it in neutral and even then sometimes when I shift back into first to start going again, it will kill. I noticed the oil was low one time, so I added oil, but now it does it still even with the right amount of oil. its very frustrating.

The next time that happens try lowering the side stand, then raising it again. See if it will start. The symptoms sound to me like an electrical problem, and a dirty, or, sticky sidestand switch is a likely culprit.
