OK I have a BAD start button. I need to know if there is a replacement for the guts of this or if anyone can tell me how to fix the copper contacts! I put dielectric grease on the contacts and put it back together and it works. But I would like to have it fixed more permanently. I want to keep it original!

Thanks for the reply dave. Unfortunately the starter button on my 83 750K maxim is not round its square. But the problem is not the button its the contacts.
Symptoms of bad starter switch contacts are no headlights, no instrument lights, no starter turn over. But you do have signal lights and brake lights.

This is what I would do.

Yours probably spent some time outside getting corroded away, so i would say if you found one that looked like it had lived a decent life, and not all sunfaded, i'd go with that.

but you said the headlights dont work sometimes? Thats on the other control side, so unless there ae issues in both of your buttons/switches, you might have a fuse issue instead.

have you replaced the stock fusebox with a blade style one?

Most XJs with the square start button have a extra set of contacts in them that turns off the headlight when starting. That one happened to me on my XJ11, you would never think a start button would keep the headlight off until looking at a wiring diagram. Two set of contacts in there , a NO for the starter and a NC for the headlight.

Yes it does have two contacts light is on until you push the starter in then the light goes out. But I just have to push it and shes running. I was hoping for a solution other then buying a used one. Could be better could be worse shape. I was lucky this bike has always been garaged by the PO. And I never leave it outside. I live out in the boonies and if its not nailed done someone will steal it. And sometimes nailing it down don't help. Thats why I have Killer, Shepard/Rotwieler cross. She hates everybody but me.

I have tried to remake the contacts from brass sheet, not much luck with that. Best solution is to find a used switch assenbly and swap the contacts. I have not found anyone who remakes them.

Well I'll look for a used one. BUT I think when I find one I'm going to see if I can solder a sman pice of copper to the old one and see what happens!

Interesting, I've noticed the headlight turn off on some bikes while starting and never thought twice about it. Makes sense for less load.
