OK, by process of elimination, I have concluded that my starter itself has issues, won't turn over, selenoid clicks, couple of light taps on the starter end cap, and it turns over a little, then nothing.....

So, trying to order the brushes from Chacal....

Question is, being mechanically inclined, though never opened a starter, is this something I can conquer myself?

It isn't too hard to install brushes if thats all it needs. If the commutator is burned or deeply scored that's a different story. A trip to a rebuilder may be in order. Just take care when disassembling it so you can see where everything belongs and be careful with the housing as it has permanent magnets fixed onto it. I dropped mine and broke one of them. I had to buy a starter for it for $100. It only fell about 18 inches.
