I pushed my starter button , which as already been replaced by the PO, The red cap snapped and the little spring jumped out and rolled down my garage drain...Boooo to that .

My question Will any starter botton work ? And can I relocate this ...great opertunity to add an Anti theft device ( hide the switch) . Im guessing its just two wires . and the button closes the circuit.

pick your self up a Momentary ON switch from radio shack for a couple of bucks. Put it where ever you like. I don't think you'll need a high current switch, maybe somebody else will confirm that.

You don't need high current no, it's only energizing a relay coil. but don't get one that's like 5mA max current :) 250mA at the least i would think.

My 550 has a Radio Shack starter button. The original shot out before I even got the bike.

You can also get a replacement button and a spring if you want that OEM look...

There is only one wire. The button grounds it.

I'm a big fan of having the start button under the right thumb. It's a safety issue, you stall in traffic you need to get her running again quick.

Chacal sells the parts kit to restore your original.

I never thought about it stalling.its already. Installed under the gas tank where the old airbox bolted on. Well hidden and since I have big mitts , the end of my finger just hits it. Maybe not as quick as it would just under the kill switch. I'm more concerned about it being stolen. Now I'm not. Perhaps a simple interuption switch is what I should have installed. I still can.

At a bare minimum, you should be able to reach it with your RIGHT hand, since you may need your left hand on the clutch at the time.

That said, you may well need your right hand on the BRAKE at the time. It's still workable if you have your foot on the rear brake (in the "stalled at a light" scenario), but MiCarl is right in the sense that there are very few controls on the bike that require you to take your hands away from the clutch/brake.

The only ones I can think of for ANY of my bikes are the petcock and the idle adjustment. Everything else is on the bars.

I like the idea of an on/off push-button switch under the tank, though, as a theft deterrent. If you make it a high current (20A) switch, you could run the Main wire through it. Then someone can't even jump or bump start it. Another (lower current) option might be to run one of the coil leads through it.

Then your real starter button stays where it belongs (for in traffic), and you can optionally enable your theft deterrent gizmo when you get off the bike with a quick reach under the tank.

You could put a kill switch on that functioned just like the side stand relay. Have it ground the lead on the TCI that kills spark.

On the 82 and 83 XJ650 it's black with white stripe.

Good call. Ill switch the starter button for a toggle switch (kill switch) and repair the orignal configuration
