    Hey all,

I just popped off the starter off of the bike and have removed the two bolts and taped the planetary side (took a while for me to find that post by Rick :D).

Should I be able to take the cover off of the starter where the brushes are to clean them out, without completely dis-assembling the starter? I look at the Diagram on the Yamaha website and there doesn't seem to be anything holding that cover onto the main starter assembly.

It sure does smell burnt in there, holy smokes. At any rate I've got my spray bottle with alcohol in there ready to wash all that crud away, I'd like to be able to pull that entire end off if possible. Thanks for any input guys.

When you remove the 2 long thin bolts the whole thing comes apart.

    Cool Wiz,

Just wanted to make sure that there wasn't some crazy a$$ way to put it all back together. You know, which requires you to assemble it with the planetary side going on last, if you follow me... Thanks!

Alcohol will leave a film when it dries, and may cause problems down the road. Use non-clorine parts cleaner to clean the carbon dust buildup out of the starter.

While you are in there. Clean up the rings on the armature with 1000 -2000 grit sandpaper, or emery cloth. you just want to make it shiny. Not remove a bunch of material.

Cool, thanks for the tip MiGhost.

Would electronics cleaner do the trick then as opposed to alcohol? I should be able to find something around here that would work. Any names you can think of?

    Stupid question.

Should there be any oil in my starter? If so how much? i opened it up and perhaps half a teaspoon ran out... :S. Doesnt sound normal, does it?

No. There should not be oil in the starter. Are you sure it is not left over residue from this?

Alcohol mixed with the carbon dust will give the appearance of oil. If it does not evaporate and dry up you need to check the o-ring in the planetary drive assy.

    Thanks again MiGhost,

Got it all cleaned out and re-assembled no problems. I'm thinking it was just left over oil from the planetary side of the starter that ran down the side.

The good news is that the starter is working fine again! This mechanic stuff is definitely a confidence booster :).
