hello, this is my first post on this forum. i have just purchased a 650 81/82 maxim, i think. i tries to start my bike with new battery only to find that my starter was smoking, and smelt like burnt plastic. i pulled the starter apart, to just find the magnet broken inside, and the plastic over the coils burnt. i looked on the internet for a new starter and saw it was like 300-500 dollars to buy a new one. i found one used locally for 125. is there any website i can be recommended to to find a new starter?. thank you for all your help, i will be using this forum for future references. and to answer any q"s i can.

    Welcome Yami,
These starters are the same for many years. It's a proven model from what I understand. Check your year by identifying it with a manual or online at Yamaha's website. At any rate, here's a starter:

    Hope this helps.

The Starter Motor is Common across several Models. You won't have too much trouble finding a Starter.

Get familiar with the Yamaha Parts Web Site so you can cross-reference Part Numbers quickly.

If you damaged the Coils, as you say ... there must be something incorrectly wired. That something melted rather than a Fuse blowing to protect the Circuit would lead me to inspect the Fuse Panel area and make sure the Wiring Harness isn't damaged by the Short Circuit melting wires to the Loom.
