Starter Nightmare

    I pulled the dead starter for cleaning and repair and am surprised it still worked the last few months since I got the bike before finally saying "no more."

    The mess under the cover was a clue it might look like this, but I forgot to get pics of that.

    It was full of dirt and grime and even a nail buried in the dried mucky mess. I doubt it had been opened in the 40 or so years since it's left the assembly line, let alone cleaned and maintained.

    This is what I found when opening up the old Little Starter That Could:

    Thanks Dave! I've followed the guide and got my starter cleaned up, new brushes installed and back on.

    However– per the statutes of Murphy, the battery is close to flat and my solenoid is just buzzing when I tried to start. I've got it on the charger now; here's hoping she cranks once charged.
