starter spins

    82 xj750j when starting ,engine cranks but sometimes it sounds like starter kicks out ,engine quits cranking but starter spins as long as i hold start button. checked all connections , still does it with 100 amp battery charger jumper

    It could be from using the wrong type of engine oil or the rollers and springs are worn in the starter cluch.

    The exact same thing happen to mine. It ended up being the starter. Put a rebuilt in there and she is as good as new. Note that once that started happening I got around for about 2 months then one day it didn't do anything and I wasn't home at the time so I had to get a ride to get my pick up and bring the bike back home. 30 year old starters.....

    Mine did that for 12 years...... If it kicked out, or didn't engage, I'd just let go of the button til it stopped spinning. Then start again. Always started up. Still has the same starter in it. Never left me stranded.

    These bikes start up pretty easy with a push-start and pop-the-clutch procedure if it's already warmed up, or the weather is good and warm. Not too likely if it's cold out, though.
