Okay, old plastic starter switch was broken, so I bought a nice new aluminum one to replace it. Looks good. Switch works, tested for continuity on the leads and get connection when I push the button. After putting it all together I and pushing it, I get nothing. No starter action. The previous owner had thought that it was impossible to get a replacement button, so he mounted a secondary switch by cutting a hole in the side panel near the battery and running wires to the... starter relay? Solenoid? Sorry, don't have the manual in front of me. It's just the left near the top of the batter. Round thing.

Anyway, the switch had a red wire and blue wire with a white stripe coming off it. I can see this blue wire with a white stripe coming down by the battery, into a two lead plastic connector which connects to the.. round thing mentioned above. The red one goes to ground somewhere else, I guess?

May be that the problem is with one of the cutoff devices in the kickstand, neutral switch, clutch etc... tried starting with stand up, in neutral, clutch in... nothing happens. Old switch seems to have bypassed it all.

Any tips on tracking this down? Haynes gives instructions on checking the relays but its wiring diagrams leave something to be desired. I would love to able to start the bike from the handlebars.

I had a hard time with my switch as well, so I got a mini push button from radio shack and mounted it inside the original starter button opening. haven't had to mess with it since.

Yea, you gotta undo the mystery wiring and redo the right thing.

You need a Meter and a Test Light.
You can even get a Test Light with a tone in it; too.

Don't place any faith in a "Hack-job" being done with correct Color Codes.
If as you said ... You think he ran a RED Wire to Ground ... that's pretty lame, even for a Hack.

You shouldn't have any trouble identifying the right wires and where to find them.

Cool. I'll have to go over the whole thing soon. Haynes doesn't seem to have much info on accessing the rats nest behind the headlight. Do I just have to rip off the whole headlight assembly?

Thanks for the diagrams MiCarl. I knew I had seen these nice colour coded diagrams before but I couldn't find 'em.

There are 2 screws that hold the headlight in the bucket. #4 in the diagram. LH screw is not shown but is there. Lift up and toward you on the bottom of the trim ring. It will pop right out.

Disconnect the pigtail (#23) and set light out of your way.
