Just put new brushes in starter, and now seems to be drawing big amps and slightly smoking! Where am I wrong here boys?

Not good, are any of the brush lead wires touching together or touching the starter case? Does the starter turn freely? Take it back apart and look things over. Make sure the positive lead wire has all the plastic insulators as it goes through the case.

Brush plate is not in the correct position. A few more degrees and it would have been turning backward on you.

Pull it back apart, and have a careful look. The "indexing" is not so obvious.
