The other day when I finished work and went to start the old XJ the battery was totally flat, left the ignition on, anyway I tried roll starting it to no avail. So I pushed her into the workshop at work and pulled out the battery to take home and charge and bring back in the morning. I was about to ring my wife to come get me when I had this stupid idea about trying a Makita 12 volt drill battery that we had at work, you know the small orange ones that push up into the drill handle. Anyway I held the battery wires on the appropriate terminals and hit the started and bugger me it started straight up.
Put the battery back in and rode home.

I've started mine with a little 9v battery, but the bike has to be warmed up good already. Otherwise, there's not enough ooomph........

the starter doesn't take much to spin. If the engine is cold it takes a lot more juice to throw a spark. But if the engine is warm, all you need is enough to spin the starter, and the electrical system will throw the spark. I couldn't do that with my 650, but I could my 700. The 650 would spin but not fire. the 700 did, but only if it was warmed up good first.

My old bike has always started really easily even when dead cold. That's why I found it strange it would not roll start but I think with a dead flat battery the alternator will not generate enough power for a spark I think the bike has to be revving over a certain speed before it the alternator works ?? So it needs some juice in the battery even to roll start does this sound right?

Very odd, My battery was totally dead after this weekend, 2 volts under load on my tester lol. I still poped it on a little hill at my house started right up. I got a new batt. the next day but I really am shocked that it would not pop start for you? Then again myn is a 550!

Ford... I never had trouble pop starting either..... Maybe you just didn't have enough speed up...... A guess--_

It shouldn't take much speed to bump start it. I bump my 650R by walking briskly.
