A few of you guys may remember me from a couple months ago when I was experiencing a no crank problem with my '86xj700. I thank you all for you input as these bike are very new to me. Since the weather and work has kept me away from this project for a while I just recently was able to get back to working on it. The newest issue is starting. Setting the choke and pushing the start button it fires right up. As soon as I release the start button it shuts off. I am now scratching my head again....any insight would be appreciated.

As promised, here is a picture of what the bike looks like now compared to when I picked her up. 20150919_141345[1].jpg 20150919_141345[1].jpg 20160209_150903[1].jpg

Open the switch and make sure all the wiring is clean and connected.

I am guessing you're referring to the start switch Gary? Thanks. I will look into that.

What was the solution to your no-crank issue? If you bypassed anything, I'm thinking you might have gotten into a situation where TCI power is being provided by the starter circuit instead of the safety circuit.

Out of curiosity, if you start it with the side-stand up, do you see the same behavior?

check the ignition fuse could be bad connection that loosens with motor vibration
when you start the bike and it stalls out on release, check the tci red white wire for voltage and at coil for voltage

in light of what @SQLGuy has stated of you having a no crank issue
check for tci voltage before you attempt to start bike and after it stalls out
this would confirm a miss wiring from previous repair

The no-crank issue was the start solenoid being connected wrong. Once I got that corrected she cranked with no problem.

I am assuming there should be 12v before and after starting?

There should be 12V on R/W whenever the key is on and the kill switch is set to RUN.

Also, IIRC, the B/W should be floating, not grounded. B/W grounded kills the TCI. This is the safety circuit that cuts ignition if the bike is taken out of Neutral with the kickstand down.

the B/w wire should also have a connector aside of the tci to disconnect to test. disconnecting bypasses the /relay

As soon as it is above freezing and not snowing I will check all these things you guys suggested and report my findings. I am so close it seems to getting this bike running and spring is not far off....I hope!!

Well it was not spring here...just over 30 degrees but warm enough for me to work on the bike. I guess I jumped the gun thinking I had another electrical problem. I didnt realize how long it would take before all the carbs would fill up with gas before it would start, but thats all the problem was. I checked the r/w wires like was suggested and had power at all times. So I just kept cranking and it eventually fired up. Took about 15 minutes. Of course opening the petcock would have helped a lot I am sure!! So thanks to all who provided advice...and hopefully my video will post so you can hear this beast running!!

Bike is running and my girl took it for a spin down the old dirt road. Trying to post the video but doesn't want to load for some reason. Hopefully this one will work

You need to embed the video from a hosting site like Youtube.

Your bike looks great. Especially considering what you started with. Well done.
