I have 82 xj750 maxim that is hard to start. Sometimes it will start right a way and sometimes it sounds like the starter motor just spins and make a loud sound. I have read that it maybe a starter clutch.

It seams that if I put it in first gear and then back to nuetral it will start after 8 or 10 tries or if I put it in nuetral and back to first and hold the clutch it will start after a few tries. But it always starts just takes sometime to play with it.

From reading some past post, I went and bought some seafoam and carb cleaners, hoping that its just gunked up and spraying the starter clutch with the carb cleaner and running the engine with seafoam in the crankcase will help. I didn't have the time to do it yet and wanted to check with the experts here first to see if this will help.

Try it. It was the experts who made that suggestion in the first place.
Also make sure that you are using a JASO MA rated oil.

I use Valvoline 10w40 4 Stroke Motorcycle oil, I don't know if it is JASO MA rated or not.

It is. In which case let's hope that the starter clutch is just sludged up and that some solvent applied to the affected area solves the problem.

If the starter clutch keeps slipping after treatment then you will need to split the cases and inspect it for cracks. If the housing isn't cracked then you can replace the rollers and springs. If it is cracked then the roller housing can be replaced seperately from the rest of the starter clutch, along with new rollers and springs.

It is also advisable to replace the starter chain guide (also referred to as the primary chain guide) as they get brittle with age and will fail (causing a fair amount of trouble in the process).

I took the starter motor out and sprayed some Gumout carb cleaner in the hole towards the starter clutch, poured about 3 ounces of Seafoam in the crankcase and road around 50 miles and stopping about every 10 miles to stop and start the bike. It seems to start up a bit faster with less tries, but I'm not convinced yet, gonna continue the treatment a few times and change the oil. Will update if it there is some convincing improvements.

About splitting the engine, can the engine be split without taking the heads and cylinders apart? just like flipping it upside down and just take the bottom part out?
