Well, my story started with a bike that would not start without some love juice (ether). So I pulled the carbs fo rthe umpteenth time and found plugged up enrichment circuits in all four bowels. After two days of cleaning and poking I got them clean. Reinstalled the carbs and she fired right up after I set it to prime to fill the bowels. Then she would just stall as soon as I hit the gas. found a vacuum leak around the carb holders/boots. The ones on my spare engine looked good so on they went with some fresh gaskets. Still same problem. Now I have no idea where to go to try and correct this. She fires right up with the choke on. Then after a couple of minutes the rpms race up to like 5000. Turn of the choke and she idles nice and easy around 1000. If I even look at the throttle she stalls. Can anybody help and at least give me a direction to run in with this. It's getting on towad June and I wanna ride. Please help!

    Does it kill when you:

    1) Pull in the clutch?

    2) Shift out of neutral?

    3) Let out the clutch?

    4) Twist the throttle?

I have an 83 xj750m and mine does the same as yours. Starts fine with the choke and after a bit races up to 4-5K. When I close the choke (or is that open?), she settles down.

However mine doesn't kill when I twist the throttle. It will kill when I pull in the clutch and shift to first. But only when I have the kickstand down.

Your Pilot Mixtures are out of whack.
If it just immediately stalls ... they're probably way too Rich.

Turn the Pilot Mixture Screws on all four ... bottom out.
Turn them out to between 2-3/4 and 3 Turns OUT.
    Closer to 3 than 2-3/4.

That will be a good starting point for Tweaking it in.
See how she runs like that.
    Monitor the Spark Plug coloration.

If they are too light or clean ... bring out the Screws the width of a Nickel at a time until you get some Tan or Brown happening on those Plugs.

If they are too dark ... Turn them IN ...
But, I doubt you'll need do turn them IN.
Tweak the Pilot Screws independently according to how each hole looks on the Plug.

You may have to do them all
You may only have to do 1 or 2 at a time.
Depends on what the Plug looks like.

Thanks Ric, I will finally have a chance to work on it again this weekend. Also Edinadad it sounds like you have a problem with your kickstand switch. It won't let you ride off with the kickstand sown.
