Has anyone modified a stock XJ650 Maxim (or really any XJ) exhaust system/mufflers? Removed/modified baffles or drilled the circle of extra holes around the main exhaust outlet like the 550 Maxim has? Wanting to make my 650 Maxim not crazy loud but a little louder, and I like the look of the stock mufflers so I'd rather not lose those. Especially interested if I can safely add the extra holes in the end of the mufflers like the 550 Maxim stock pipes have.

I have drilled extra holes in the back. I did make it a little louder, but not really worth it. If you never plan on selling it then just do whatever you want.

Do not drill any extra holes in your mufflers.....these bikes are designed to operate with a certain amount of backpressure from the exhaust system.....

You gain no benefit by drilling holes in them.....you only make things worse......appearance and performance wise

Did it affect performance at all? If it really affects performance in any way I would rather not do it. Do not want to have to rejet the carbs and all that

The factory exhaust is a fairy-fart away from being as free-flowing as open pipes are.
    Leave it as-is.

    Good article.....

In my opinion...and only my opinion.....these bikes are great for keeping stock except for safety items.....

To each his own....if someone wants to drill another 4 to 6 holes around the only one that is in the muffler to gain another decibel or two.....have at it.......bob and chop it too.....

I guess I am a purist when it comes to these bikes

    Again......just my opinion.....

They aren't making any more stock xj650 mufflers so I wouldn't be drilling holes or cutting out baffles.

If someone wants a bike that are louder than our Hardley's, then they should go buy a Harley.......

In my opinion, these bikes are meant to be kept stock for the most part........not bobbed and chopped and podded........but then that is just me.....

Very good friend of mine worked for Harley as a service tech for 10-12 years and his daily ride is a 78 or 79 cb400 hard tail chop...

Sure Is! Got a Harley clutch perch on the shifter which is where the clutch actually is. Worked out that the mirror is affixed to the perch same as it would if it were on the handlebars. It's quite the little machine. It's not dubbed the junkster for no reason haha.
