ok guys, here is where i am at with my bike. it is an 82 seca 750. i pulled it out of a barn late last year and spent most of the winter getting it running. tank was rusted completely through, carbs were DIRTY, tires dry-rotted, yada yada.

    items removed:
    square headlight
    square foglight
    original turn signal
    original handlebars
original speedo/tach and monitor with lcd
    stock airbox

    items added:
    7 inch round head light
    cat eye turn signals
    fork boots
    tinted fly screen
front fender, tank and tail painted
speedo and tach from 88 yamaha fz750
    gp sport handlebar
    pods and larger jets

seat is being recovered, that is why it is missing from pictures. i still need to find some side covers. tach works, but does not report correctly. it is either malfunctioning, or the sending unit for the 88 was different. i may lose the tach and run just the speedo. bike has some road rash on the left muffler, and still has a bunch of surface rust. bike runs great. what do ya'll think?

weeellllllll........ i got it from flyncycle. it was advertised as fitting a 7 or 8 inch light, which is a load of crap. it is designed for an 8, and can be modified to fit a 7. i had to trim the brackets, drill 2 extra holes in the screen itself, and i cut a couple of inches of the bottom, and boxed the outside edges. it looked like this when i got it. $54 plus shipping.

no go on the tach, as it cannot be disassembled. outside "ring" appears to be cold welded to housing. i might try another one if i find another one cheap enough. :?

On some Yamaha models the tach ran off the ignition from one of the coils but on others it ran off one leg of the alternator so if it doesn't work one way you might try switching the wires around.

yeah, i tried switching the wires up. with three wires there are a total of 6 wiring possibilities. 2 of the 6 combinations ground out the bike in such a way that only 2 cylinders fire, 2 more combinations do nothing, and the other 2 combinations work one of two ways. Either the rpms report really low (how i currently have it wired) or the rpms report super high. again, i don't know if the tach is working 100% or if the sending unit from the 88 fz is different. i had high hopes for making it work because it shared so many similarities with the stock tach. it is three wire, the three wires are the same color, and if memory serves me correctly, the three wires were wired in the same pattern. i am bidding on another cluster as we speak, so i may have another to compare against.

There is no sending unit. If it's an electric tach with 3 wires then you have power, ground and the sensor that connects to either the neg. terminal of one of the coils or one leg of the alternator. Either way it shouldn't ground out anything unless it's shorted internally.

hmmm.....thanks for pointing that out. i always thought that the sensor wire received its signal from a sending unit. so, should i try running a wire from the alternator to the place where the sensor wire comes into the tach?
