So I go to change the oil on my xj650 and the previous owner apparently stripped the hell out of the oil filter housing bolt and me trying to break it free finished it off. So my question is if I drill off the head of the bolt can I get the filter housing off and unscrew everything on the inside and switch over to the spin on oil filter kit from chacal?

Drilling wasn't working so well. I looked up the picture of the bolt and figured out why, lol. Changed tactics and went at it with a saw-zall cut lke 4 slits in the housing then used a chisel and a hammer and broke the housing apart. Then the bolt turned right out, with part of the housing still rusted/fused to the bolt.

^THAT^ method for solving your problem has been posted dozens, and dozens of times on this forum.

General question: When did searching for answers become not a thing to do? Was it when USENET was supplanted by the WWW? (Show of hands; who else among us was a USENET surfer?)
I'm genuinely curious. I did a Google search of this site and got 155 unique results for "oil filter bolt stuck." Even the relatively poor search function that comes with the forum software gave me 83 posts to look at.

My point being that the easier (and less likely to cause case damage) method XJ550H mentions could have been found and used faster than any of us would have been able to answer your question. I'm not trying to pick on you. I just have been seeing this a lot lately. Someone asks a question about solving a common, and well documented problem. Usually when I answer that type of question all I'm doing is linking to a thread that I either bookmarked, or found from a search.

Sorry, I did search and only saw things involving extractors, grinding, couldn't find a drilling method, in my frustration and time crunch ( I only get a hour or so a night to work ) I posted hastily and should have searched more, I did find the sawz all method on here and that's what I did.

Sometimes we are limited by the tools on hand. I don't have a grinder but I do own a sawzall!

OK. Again I'm not ragging on you, just wondering why. Upon reflection, I should have started a thread in order to satisfy my curiosity.
No need to apologize for how you approached the problem. You got the work done.

I used dial up to connect to bulletin board systems before WWW. My kids don't know what dail-up is, let alone what existed before the web.

i'm not even 30 yet and I know that sound lol

My oil bolt was stripped as well and I took and 11mm combo wrench and the ring spanner side was almost a perfect fit, so I hammered it on there and now it has the grooves for the ring side of the wrench to work perfectly..
