Hey, my right side mirror cracked in a very unlucky tip-over a couple days ago. I realize it's reverse threaded, and the "cap" that locks it from spinning moves easily.

It looks pretty rusted, but I just cannot seem to spin the damn stem off. I've Wd-40ed it, too, but just can't seem to get the stem to turn. If I push TOO hard I either spin the cylinder with the brake fluid on it around the handlebars or get scared of breaking something.

Any suggestions on how to get this thing off?

    Thanks.

A good pair of vise grips, and an old broom handle. Take the MC off and strap it to the broom handle. Clamp the stem securely in the vise-grips, have a friend stand on the vise-grips and crank on the broom handle. Had to do this for the honda when i got it.

Remove the mirror from the top joint and leave the stem in place.

Don't forget the right stem has left hand threads!!!

Ok, well.... I tried that trick and now I'm really in deep. On the first pull the stem bent and snapped right off at the threads, leaving nothing sticking out of the hole. So now I've got half of the threads from the mirror stem stuck in the hole and no way to get them out...

I may try putting a small screw into the top of the broken threads and continuing to drill in that direction later tonight.

Otherwise, anyone know if this right brake lever will work on an '82 XJ650 Seca? It looks exactly the same as the one on my bike.

Looks like it should work fine. Ask the seller for a picture with the top off, that way you'll know that the screws aren't torqued to he!!, see the inside and rubber seal.

I may have a spare arm for the mirror. Can't recall if it's a left side or right side. I'll check around.

I had the exact same problem when i picked my bike up the guy didn't have the mirrors and the stems would not come out. I used a torch, rust away and a hamer to spin the stems off. At one point the right one would not come off so I went to the local bike shop and the guy had a set of mirrors with stems and handle bar clamps that fit perfectly and look nicer than the ones that were there for 20 bucks.

So I ended up taking it down to my grandfather's garage and using the air-powered tools. Drill bits slowly getting larger and penetrating oil to almost the threads, then drilling through into the MC, then hammering and "peeling" out the thin outer shell of the bolt off the threads along with some careful grinding. I've never seen so much bad corrosion so deep into a bolt.

Possibly someone got some brake fluid in there under the stem years ago? I managed to save the threads as best as I could and as soon as my mirror comes in, it should fit right in.

Kek515, don't forget to use anti-seize when you install your new mirror to prevent this from happening again!
