Hadn't seen this discussed, and wondered if anyone cared, but if one were to go all out for a brand new model off the showroom floor, what matches a Maxim?

Sorry if I hit a nerve to the diehard lovers of the classics, but just curious. If anything, just to pull up next to the guy riding one and say, "Hey man, that's just a souped up XJ, bro! Nothin' special."

Then speed away before he gets a chance to figure out how to make his super-modern machine compute 'go forward'! :p

    Maxim = sport cruiser.
What's like a Maxim? Not much. Most of the cruisers are v-twins and not sporty, most of the transverse 4's are sport bikes except for the big touring bikes.
If I was to buy anything new, it would come down to 3 bikes. Yamaha Stryker, Yamaha V-Max or Honda Fury(because they look so good). Have to say that the Stryker is my first choice. The V-Max has some things on it that look too busy and would have to change (seat, mufflers and pipes just to start with).

Honestly? Nothing, any more. The Maxim was a cruiser with an inline four; today "Cruisers" absolutely have to be V-twins, period.

O&B is right; nowadays all of the transverse fours are in sportbikes or touring bikes. The cruisers have all become as Harley-esque as possible, while the sportbikes all look like they escaped from a Transformers movie.

Try to find a "standard" motorcycle any more. Except for a couple of the Triumph twins, there just isn't any such thing. IN THE USA.

<this is where I would post a pic of the XJR1300>

I liked the feel of sitting on the FZ8 but haven't had the opportunity to test ride one.

The FZ8 is a way-cool bike; a direct 5th generation descendant of our bikes, devoid of fairings---

except it also looks like it

And what's with 39mpg? Seriously? That's hardly better than my CAR...

    Hence OP's dilemma.

    I know, right?

The (600cc) R6 gets around 43 compared to the 52~56 we get from 30-year old 550s.

With computer-controlled, fuel injected, liquid-cooled high tech magic. I can't figure it out either.

let me get this right. you want a new bike with dated engine design, old school suspension and barely adequate electrical system.
throw in some obsolete tires and brakes from back in the day with styling from a bygone era. it would have to have part availability problems and no dealer support and only a handful of people who knew how to work on it.
i think your looking at a Ural or maybe a Harley

Polock - the nail on the head, buddy! Gimme an XJ for s**t's sake!

Looking at some websites I don't get why you got nothing in between a Harley or a Vulcan and the FZ8 look. It's either vegas or robot.

Maybe another few years, the designers will come around.

    Anyway, thanks for playing.

Polock, the first time I heard of Aprilia was about 2001. A couple I was friends with were on some kind of tour of Europe. In Spain they rented an Aprilia, it was a big single called, I crap you negative, "Pegaso: the Flying Mythos." I don't know about the bike, but that name beats "Maxim" all to hell.

Edit: here it is, actually the Pegaso 600, but has a freaking winged horse and "the Flying Mythos" written on the tank!

So why won't they give US bikes that look like this? They MAKE them, they won't bring them here.

Because the marketing department at Yamaha is a bunch of... er... you know...

It's not just US. The XJR line has not been sold anywhere in either North or South America. Ever.

From reading about it the XJR is a descendant of the 550 Seca. Chain drive, six speed. The 400 should be very close.

Yamaha doesn't sell the XJR in the States because while the 1300 is a extremely nice looking, and no doubt nice running bike, many of us would ask for a descendant of the Maxim, like a XJR1300j. LOL!

Honda has one - a new 1100 that embodies the feel of a classic CB 750 but with fuel injection and modern brakes. It's even de-tuned to 85 Horsepower - which is unheard of in any 1100 today.

That's an '05, they've gone to a 4-1 pipe but little else has changed. But the bloody thing is still a 2013 model in Europe and for those Ozzy bas**rds too.

YES, it's a direct descendant of the Seca 550, and the very original XJ-- the XJ400 (which looked just like a 550 Seca.) With much bigger 'nads. AND A ROUND HEADLIGHT AND 4 CHROME PIPES. That you can see.

I'd sell everything in the garage (except the Norton) if I could have an '05, a blue one, like in the pic. With a stripe, like in the pic.

    Damn.

Uh oh. It's not nice to do that to an old man; I nearly "incontinenced" myself.

Too bad it's a Honda. Maybe Yamaha will buy a clue if it does halfway well here. We can only hope. (I've had Hondas. Once you own a Yammie there's no going back.)

Now, here's an interesting thought. XJRs went from carbs to FI at some point. Since the engines are not that dissimilar, couldn't the FI from an XJR be adapted to an XJ? It would be a lot easier to get the components shipped than a whole bike...

Thanks fitz and timetoride. That was what I was looking for. Tough s*** that I gotta travel to EU to test ride one, but at least I know that a modern match is being designed somewhere.

That 2010 CB video is exactly what I feel like everyday. Endless skies. Honda or not, I would own it, and keep it safe and warm.

Sorry Polock. While an automatic drive and auto-clutch is appealing for my suit-and-tie rides, the Aprilia is only the runner up. "Pegasus, away!"

My uncle lives in sydney. If he bought it, and somehow brought it back here, would there be any way for me to title it?

this is a plan far far far out. but something i'd like to find out before i ever get my hopes up tooooo high.

I don't think a title would be much of an issue, long as it has paperwork from the country it came from. Just wondering what the insurance would be like. If the insurance company would view it as something exotic and jack the rates way up.

Okay, digging up my old post, but I wanted to update the conv, since I looked at this the other day, 2013 Triumph Bonneville (not the t100):

    http://www.triumphmotorcycles.com/motor ... /2013/5031

Even though less perfection in the engineering as an XJ or modern equivalent, I like it, and could consider rescuing a used one in the next few years.

I like the style on the Bonnie. Seems like the only standard type you can get these days, save for a Suzuki TU-250.

You could also up the cylinder count to three, with Yamaha's new triple:

    2014 FZ-09

Definitely more of a naked sport bike though.

Just wait a few months after the release.....Yamaha has strongly hinted at releasing a dualsport version of that bike if the naked one does well.

I am looking forward to seeing what else they put that triple in as they've tuned it to provide lots of torque for just 850cc's.

Maybe they'll have a range of displacements and do a smaller lightweight model (to compete with Honda's new 500cc line), and a larger sport touring one as well, that isn't a 600+ lb. sled.

Would love to see yamaha make a 4 cyl std again take a fz1 punch it out to 1400 cc would scream lots of torque and great power. I guess not enough people want them to warrant it. Still love the days of maxim 1100s eliminator 1000s kz 1000s-1100s and gs 1100s and 1150s. By todays standards they are slower then 600cc sport bikes. But thats just the kinds of bikes we like. When you think about it in the states the last cruiser style inline 4 cyl was the maxim x. The had fj1200 but was more sport touring orientated

That is an easy question to clear up. Fz6 might only be 50 ccs bigger then the 550 but it makes about 2x the power. Remember all a motor is is a big air pump more fuel and air you put thru it the more power. All those valves and rpm takes serious fuel. a 1100 maxim makes about 95 hp and we know how much they like gas. Figure if you could get that out of your 550 how much fuel it would use. An 2013 r6 claimed power was 127 at 14500 rpm that is 1 heck of a lot of air pumping thru those cyls.

I say we start a petition to get the xjr1300 here in the states. If they really think about it there could be a market here. We have the retro mustang, dart, challenger, charger, camaro, and I think there is a retro stingray coming out in 2014. Why not a retro yami. By the way I will take 2 xjr1300's both in yellow of course. k moe where did yo dig that photo up, love the yellow trim on the rims, might do that to mine.
