Has anyone heard of evil road spirits? According to legend, they're out there, and they're attracted to motorbikes. They supposedly get on the bike and cause all types of mischief. The remedy is to attach a bell to the bike, and the bad Kami gets trapped in it, and the ringing drives them goofy, falling out.
Silly superstition, right? Well, I thought so. A couple of months ago I was doing a little Rebel maintenance, and I found a silver bell hanging off the bottom of the frame. I had a rattling sound, so I removed the bell in order to eliminate any interference in finding what was loose. Less than 2 hours later, on my ride to work, I blew out a crankcase seal, causing oil to leak out all over the shiny chrome exhaust. Blue smoke all over the place, black charred residue caked on the exhaust, stranded in an oil puddle at work, and nearly 300$ in repairs at the shop.
So, what do the people think? Do I put it back on? To quote an old blues man, "I ain't superstitious, but a black cat crossed my path." Does anyone else have a bell on their ride? Any other driving/riding superstitions to share?

Interesting. My buddies Triumph came with a little bell underneath. Always wondered what the story was.

Superstition say when you ride without a passenger to put the foot pegs up so that the evil spirits have nowhere to ride with you. I ride with two 10 mm nuts wired to the adjuster on the swingarm. They are my lucky nuts.

Around here, people call them Gremlin Bells and they " attract the gremlins with their pretty ringing, but the bells are hung right in front of the rear wheel so the gremlins get run-over"

The only bad spirits are those that one might drink before a ride. Save that for after, and you'll be fine.

Personally, I depend on the Holy Spirit to keep away the evil.

Apparently the holy spirit has been otherwise occupied for the last 40 years of my life. Or doesn't care to deliver me from evil. I have to make chooses for my own self. Lucky me.

I think it is more of a Harley thing. I bumped this thread to one of my biker friends, and he sent me a picture of the bell on his bike, and was kinda upset and shocked that I did not have one on mine....he is sending me one. Evidently it has to be given by someone who loves you as a brother or sister to work, you can't buy your own.....I guess I will be getting one for my son.....with all the a******* not paying attention on the road, any little bit helps.
