Good morning all. Just joined the forum, and first time posting so I hope it's in the right section.

I just bought am 85 maxim xj700. It wouldn't hold an idle when I bought it. The guy said he had cleaned the carbs but with no luck getting her going.

After ready multiple posts, and skimming through the church of clean, I simply adjusted the idle mixture screws and she was good to go.

Now it's no where near ideal riding condition, I plan to take it apart and follow the church of clean to make sure everything is up to snuff.

I'm pretty sure I understand everything I need to do, bench sync, color plugs, valve clearance and all that but I have one question. Before I start.

I keep seeing the term engine sync, or syncing the carbs with the engine, but haven't seen anything that goes into more detail about that. Is that the same thing as a bench Sync? Or something totally different?

Thanks for the help. I'm sure I'll be posting more questions in the future lol

The bench sync gets you to a starting point before you do the running sync, being able to start and be somewhat close to in sync. I use a Morgan Carbtune for syncing my carbs, syncing one to two, four to three, then two to three (if memory serves correctly - there are threads on here for it). In the end all carbs are synced to number three and all four will work together. Hope that helps. I'll post a link to the engine (running) sync if I can find it in the next few minutes.

From the Information Overload: http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/threads/the-information-overload-hour.27544/ Information on doing a running sync is about a third of the way down.

The Church of clean is a FULL tear down butterfly plates removed and shaft to replace the seals , to do this correctly you have to "break" the rack . Remove all seals gaskets , jets etc soak in carb cleaner ( 1 gallon Berrymans my favorite) for 1 hr per carb . (means 1 carb body at a time) wash carb with hot water and Dawn dry completely. Reassemble with all NEW seals do not reuse ANY of old seals, once carbs are back on rack , do a bench synch ( I use a business card cut in 2 (2 cards) , slide one each under the butterflys, adjust synch screws till you get a slight drag on the card. When I say synch screws do not mistake these for the mixture screws , the synch screws are between the carb bodies there are 3 but your idle adjustment under neigh will also come into play.
