    Question:

Are the transmissions on the Xj bikes "Synco-Mesh" ? Meaning, once you get rolling in first you can shift thru gears without using the clutch.

    Just wondering.

Yes. Actually it is called constant mesh return shift. Constant mesh meaning from 2nd to 5th there is no neutral. Return meaning that you have to return through all the upper gears to get back to first. No way to go from 1st to 3rd, 2nd to 4th etc.

No synchros at all in a Moto transsmission.(dunno about those Monster touring bikes for old men tho)
Gears are engaged by 'dogs' that slide into apprpriate holes in the gears thereby locking them up. Work s "fine' and Yes you can shift without the clutch.. BUT.. unless v skilled each such shift wears a little more on these metal bits.. eventually rounding them off and causing jumping out of gear :)
So unless yr in a Moto GP.. not a clever thing to do... if you want to keep the Bike.. then there is also the question of: did the previous owner shift sans clutch?? and if so how many such shifts are left in it ? :)

Agree with Danilo, there are no syncros in our XJ boxes. Syncro-mesh refers to the blocker rings (kinda like a "clutch") inside the gear cluster for the various gears. They help take the slack up and allow the gears to smoothly mesh without the harsh engagement that would otherwise be present in the gear box. Good idea to check the condition of the gears and such when the case is split, stitch in time as the saying goes (thank God I haven't found any damage to either of my engines so far). As Danilo pointed out, our beasts can be shifted without the clutch but it is NOT a recommended practice, damage to the gears will result.

    I stand amazed!!!

Somewhere some engineer with a sliderule or computer stayed up nights designing and pouring over designing this bike.

The exhaust had to be just right, the fuel system had to be just right, the specs on clearances and balance had to be just right.......
well to make the long story shorter....

Why the #%*! do people think that that clutch lever can be bypassed, disregarded.......

    ENOUGH, I wont go on.

That right lever (the clutch lever) is designed to make those gears shift smoothly without damaging them or anything else as well.
    Please, USE IT!

OOps, I didn't know I might upset some people with this question. I was just asking a simple question. Trying to learn more about my bike.

I guess I need to clarify. While I may have said yes the tranny can be shifted without a clutch, which is how I got myself home when one broke on me 250 miles from home, it is not a good idea for general practice. Just a slight pull on the clutch ensures a long lasting one!
