I have a small oil leak where my Tach cable connects to the engine. Is there supposed to to be a o-ring or anything in the knurled screw on cap to prevent this?

    Bump.

Has anyone got a fix for a leaky mechanical tach? Is an upgrade to the 1982 and newer electronic version possible?

    Here is your solution:

HCP3539 OEM tachometer cable drive gear (on cylinder) OIL SEAL. If you're leaking oil where the tach cable attaches to the drive housing on the drive adapter housing, it's because this oil seal (and/or the drive gear O-ring) is bad and need to be replaced. Fits all XJ550 models, 1980-81 XJ650 Maxim and Midnight Maxim models, and 1982 XJ650 Seca model.
    $ 4.00

HCP3537 OEM tachometer cable drive gear O-RING. If you're leaking oil where the tach cable attaches to the drive housing on the drive adapter housing, it's because this o-ring (and/or the housing oil seal) is bad and need to be replaced. Fits all XJ550 models, 1980-81 XJ650 Maxim and Midnight Maxim models, and 1982 XJ650 Seca model.

Thanks! I'll add it to my next order. My ignition coils are acting up. I'll be ordering the Dyna replacements soon.

Also make sure the plastic sheath on the cable isn't cracked near the engine. That can allow some oil leakage as well.

What's the best way to replace this one?

Do you just have to get in there with a pick and carefully pry it out? Or does the threaded piece unthread from the housing?

I have the the housing removed. Replacing the o-ring is a no-brainer but that seal is way down in there.

I replaced the seal on my 81 650 Maxim and it came out with the tach drive. If I recall correctly, it's a rubber o-ring that fits around the tach drive unit that pops out of the front of the cylinder head. It's held in place by a small plate, secured by a single allen bolt. Anyway, should be a very simple fix.

Just don't do this! I twisted on the cable attachment with a pair of pliers and heard a "snap". I replaced the broken drive unit and tightened finger tight with a pair of gloves on. No more leak.[IMG]

PM chacal, he's the one you quoted and thats his "catalog" you quoted. Great service. Just make sure you tell him your model so he gets you the correct part.

    OK,

I'm having a hard time figuring out how to get at these.

    1. How do I get teh O-ring off? Pick it out and roll it off?
    2. According to the parts diagram there is a seal inside, and the threaded "adapter" comes off. How do I get this threaded piece off (see my red arrow)

I'm new to this whole wrench monkey stuff, so I don't want to break anything takgin it off the wrong way.

i'm not experienced with these (yet).
but at the top of the theaded part it looks like theres a slot.
if that slot is on the other side as well then you should be able
    to turn it out.
now please don't take my advice as fact as i'm not sure i'm
correct, but i've seen similar parts set up that way.
