So my tach cable keeps coming loose at the engine and pouring oil down the front of the motor. I looked at it and it isn't the cable part that comes loose, it is the threaded sleeve that screws into the housing in the motor that unscrews. How can I get this to stay tight?

Does anyone have a tach drive block-off plug and a source for an electric tach??

I am sick of this mechanical piece of smelly mud.

The oil seal that sits behind the threaded sleeve is leaking. Secas are notorious for these seals failing, not only on the 3 I've had, but many at the dealership I once worked. Remove the drive housing (pulls out after removing 5mm allen & plate), clean everything up real good, replace the o-ring sealing the housing, replace the seal (use a small socket, or seal driver), use blue 242 Loctite on the sleeve threads to keep that bugger from coming out. Oh, make sure the geared drive piece isn't grooved from the old seal or you'll still be leaking!

yeah it is a new seal. it only leaks when the sleeve unscrews itself. I think I am going to see if someone can provide me with a new setup from a parts bike. I had the housing I had machined for a different "better" seal. Another housing I can just replace the seal and use the stock type one.

I've had leakage problems with my Maxim since day one. Replaced all seals and o-rings twice as well as the entire gear and housing unit once. Still leaks. I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to switch back to the stock seal arrangement PghXJ, you might have made an improvement. Just getting the collar to stay tight is the challenge and it sounds like Smokamoto has a good solution.

I coated the threads of that sleeve with loctite last night, so here's to hoping. I noticed the cap part of the tach cable that screws onto this piece is bent, so I have to screw it in much further for it to hold the cable tight, and I actually bottom it on the housing before it gets 100% tight. That will require a new cable. ugh...

This is one of those things that just make me go crazy...stupid little oil leaks.
