Recently I dismantled the instrument panel to my XJ 550 Maxim. I dismantled it to screw in the lose screws (speedometer back panel lost some) and replace some bulbs. When I reconnected the tach cable to both the instrument panel and the engine, the RPMs are very slow to catch up.

For example, if I rev the engine, it used to show the RPMs immediately as the needle flew upward. Now, the needle slowly crawls until it hits the actual RPM. Anyone know what's up with that? Does oil from the engine eventually crawl up to the trachometer?

    Here's a video

yes, the tachometer is lubed with engine oil. i've got an oil leak from mine. have to figure out what it uses for a seal and replace it as mine is missing.

well, i've got engine oil shooting into my cable. unless i've got a bad gear assembly that isn't supposed to be leaking. cuz i'm defenitly getting a drop of oil here and there coming from my tach cable. where it connects to the gear head at the motor.

Your tachometer drive oil seal has failed; see my post above.

Thanks for the response. I saw those posts and I was hoping I wouldn't have to dismantle the actual tach. I had only replaced the bulbs, but I guess that was enough to cause it to dry out??

I think I'll live with this for now (as it's only the tach). I'll be sure to clean it at the end of the riding season. Thanks again for the reply.

P.S. I've added my bike to my signature.
