Ok so I decided to change my tail light today. I chopped my fender drilled holes for my new bracket and installed the new light. I didn't know what wires would go with what wires as they were different colrs. Anyway after finding out wich of the three wires was the ground I decided to just try my luck with the other two but to my suprise my bike wont start now. My neutral light wouldn't even come on. I unplugged all the wires changed my fuse just in case and my bike started again. I decided to try again. I plugged the ground from the tail light and one other wire while my bike is running and it's all good. I realize that my light is really bright so I put it together that was my brake light wire so i switched it to my yellow wire from my bike and as soon as I hit the brake pedal my bike died again. This is frustarating!!!
Im using a Cat eyes aftermarket tail light. 3 fuctions running light, brake light and license plate light. So far no matter what wires I plug up I only get a really bright light (Brake light) No running light. Any one ever deal with anything like this. I changed the main fuse again to see if my bike would turn on but this time it didn't.

    Re: Electric bug? wont start.

You should be doing this with your trusty maintenance manual open to the electrical section, wiring schematic for your model to be specific. Your rear lights (license and tail) are handled by the three wires Black (ground), Yellow (Brake), and Blue (running light). The license light piggy backs off of the Black and Blue wires.
Your turn signals are handled by the Black (ground), Dark Green and Dark Brown wires (not sure about which side is which but you've got a 50/50 shot at being right). Dark Green should be the right side.
Make sure you have a few spare fuses on hand and go about this methodically. Let us know how you fare.

Re: Tail light electric bug? wont start now.

I only messed with the blue the yellow and a ground but it still made my bike die. I haven't been able to turn her on after that. My battery is at 12.6v and my fuses are good. Anyone know what else could make my bike die from this?

    Re: Electric bug? wont start.

Ok so I check all my fuses and they're good. My battery was at 12.6v.
Im not getting any of my lights to turn on my starter is dead.
What else should I check? I have a multimeter and im ready for some troubleshooting. I just dont know what else to check.
I noticed that if I dont have enough gas my bike does the same thing. No lights work, my nuetral light wont turn on and my starter has no power. After I put my petcock on PRI and pump my bike then I get power.
Sadly it didn't work this time around.

I guess I'll check it tomorow.

Re: Electric bug? It starts now just no power to display

I got my bike to start but Im getting no power to my signals, my brake lights, my horn or my display lights. Some how my starter button works fine. I could really use some help here. I also notice the the previous owner had taken a fuse out and connected the red/white wire directly to it self. I put a blade fuse bettween the wire already. What could I have bernt out to net get power to my display?

    ALL FIXED!!!
I realized my signal fuse was not making good contact.
It was one of the tube style fuses I changed it to a blade fuse and all is back and running.
one other thing I did was rebuild my taillight so it cant cause the same problem again I took all the componets from my original light and put them in my aftermarket taillight housing. So not only does my bike work again I have a cutom taillight as well.

I know that many of you don't like to mess with electrical but Im a stubborn man I had to get this fix.

To Robert. Belive it or not your advise save my bike.
I pulled out the manual and dove into those wiring diagrams.
    Thanks man.
