Taking the back tire off a shaft drive bike

    How does one go about removing the back tire and rim? I need to take it to the cycle shop and have a tire put on. If I take it off myself and take it in it will take minutes. If I take it to them and let them do the work it will take weeks and probably cost more also.

    you need a Haynes Manual on ebay about $20. Covers all sorts of basic maintenance procedures (including tire removal) and it is worth having. Removing the back tire is not bad at all, the shaft drive remains intact, 10 minute removal max.

    Remove Cotter Pin on Brake Stay Bolt.
    Remove Nut & Washers
    Remove Special Bolt

    Remove Brake Adjustment Special Hex Nut Type fitting.
    Loosen Brake Actuating Arm Pinch Bolt.
    Remove Pinch Bolt.

    Remove Actuating Arm from Shaft
    Remove Arm From Rod
    Collect Drilled Bush, Spring and Washers if fitted.

    Lower Brake Pedal Rod
    Lower Brake Housing Stay

    Remove Axle Cotter Pin
    Remove Axle Castle Nut
    Collect Nut and Spacer

    Loosen Axle Pinch Bolt
    Observe Spacer on Axle Inboard on Axle against Brake Housing.
    Remove Axle.
    Collect Spacer

    Push Wheel away from Drive Unit
    Disengage Wheel from Drive Unit.

    Roll Wheel to Rear of Bike
    Withdraw Brake Housing

    Sand Axle and apply rust free finish
    Treat Axle with AntiSeize Compound

    Clean with Disk Brake Clean
    Get rid of Ridge on Brake Drum
    De-glaze Drum / Sand w/ 320

    Replace Shoes as needed.
    Clean, refinish, lube Cam.

    Use a 4-Inch long section of 2X4 to support Wheel when reinstalling Wheel back into Drive Unit.
    Roll Tire onto 2X4
    Put Hammer Handle under 2X4 to lever tire upwards.

    Let me elaborate a bit more on the wheel removal, you have to remove the brakes with the wheel as there is no room to remove the brakes, I made the mistake of trying and got a scratched up backing plate for my efforts.

    On that special bolt Rick mentions at the bottom of the backing plate where the torque arm attaches, remove the bolt only if it's loose, I have found that on all three of my XJ's, that the bolt was firmly stuck and there was no need to remove it.

    That isn't technically a step Rick omitted, it is a step that should not be done, hence he didn't list it as something to do.

    I do agree that he should have mentioned not removing the backing plate. It's not impossible, but it is extremely difficult.

    As for removing the brake actuating arm, I personally don't remove it, but it does make the rear wheel easier to remove if the arm is off and out of the way.
