Ok so there are two of them on the floats. One that holds the needle and one that stops the float on the pillar. After rebuilding my carbs i went to wet set them. Gas just started pouring everywhere. I don't think moving the tang arm that holds the needle will do it. Im thinking that the arm that stops the floats on the pillar needs to be adjusted.

Is this something that typically needs to be adjusted?

Is this something that i should even be messing with?

Follow the steps from "fuel setting" from xj4ever how to's, it doesn't mention anything about that. Also tried searching through the forum and haven't found anything related.

I really don't see any other way of being able to set the fuel levels without messing the that arm. There's just to much play in the floats. Any suggestions would be great.

    Thanks
    Jim

You shouldn't mess with the tab that stops the float on the pillar. That will do nothing to affect your fuel level anyway. Just be sure you're bending the tang arm in the right direction. It can be confusing which way to bend it. The fuel setting how-to that you referenced shows how to do it. If neither direction works, then you're float valves must not be sealing properly.

Well i just pulled out another set of carbs that are the same. These have there fuel levels already set and are off a running bike. Took the float bowl off. Flipped them upside down and measured the float. How far it hangs down. Theres a 1/4 OF A INCH difference in how far the float hangs down. Thats a BIG difference.

The floats that hang down a 1/4 inch further are the carbs that flood right when fuel is introduced. Theres no amount of bending that tang arm that holds the needle enough to make up for that. ????

The down stop tangs should not ever need adjusting. How far down the floats set when the bowls are empty has no bearing on the fuel height when the bowls are full. The down stops are there only to prevent the float arm from hanging up on the float pillars.

The needle tang is all that needs to be adjusted. Adjustment is in a series of "bumps", not bends. If you see it bend then you moved the tang too far.
Make sure that you have the floats in the right way around. Refrence the photo on page 7 http://www.xj4ever.com/setting fuel levels.pdf

Also be cognizant of which way you need to bend the tang in order to adjust the fuel level. Bending the tang towards the needle lowers the fuel level. Bending it toward the fuel bowl raises the fuel level.

Let's also all be clear on what down and up are when discussing how far down the floats hang. Down is the bottom of the float bowl when the carbs are installed on the bike, and up is where the jets are.

Is your 1/4" measurement being taken when the carbs are upside down? Are the floats that are letting the fuel overflow closer to or farther from the carb body as compared to the good set when the carbs are upside down? Are you positive that the floats aren't installed upside down?

I think photos are in order. Some problems are easier to figure out when I have the very thing to look at.

If the floats that are hanging down 1/4 further are doing that when the carbs are upsidedown on thebench, then you are bending the tang the wrong way.

With the carbs upside down on the bench:

When the floats stop closer to the carb body (where the jets are) then that raises the fuel height.

When the floats stop further from the carb body, that lowers the fuel height.

    Yes

    Further from the body.

    100%

The bike is new to me. Maybe to PO could've done something to them.

See what k-moe said above about float heights when carbs are upside down. The father the floats are away from the carb body when carbs are upside down, the lower the fuel level. I agree that pics may be needed. The position of the floats that you are describing shouldn't be allowing fuel levels to be so high that it would cause overflowing.

Were the needles and seats replaced? Were the seat o-rings replaced?

The needles appeared to be new when I got the bike. No wear on them at all. Also new float bowl gaskets were never used. I didn't take a chance on any o ring on the carbs. They are all new and came from chacal.

I am specifically asing about the float needle seat o-rings.
Seen on the brass float needle seat in the below photo.

Setting the fuel height sucessfully requires that the float needles seal against the seat, and that the o-ring for the seat does not allow fuel to bypass the seat.

    Good. That eliminates that possibility.

It appears that your carbs are in the upright position as they would be on the bike in the picture you posted which is allowing the floats to just hang down. There is a big difference between them but just hanging down like that isn't really the important dimension. Turn the carbs to a 60 or 70 degree angle where the tang just barely touches the needle plunger and measure from the gasket surface of the carb body to the furthermost point of the float. Compare that measurement to a carb that's not overflowing. Correct me if I'm wrong about the orientation of the carbs in your pic.

Assuming the the bottom of the photo is down, then the down stops probably do need to be adjusted (though to my eye the right float isn't hanging too far down). The floats may be getting hung up and not lifting when fuel enters the bowls. You can check their action with a sacrificial pyrex measuring cup, or mason jar. You'll be using them as a substitute, see-through, float bowl to watch the floats move.

    Especially when it's 90+ today.

Well I gave a those tabs a little nudge. Hooked the tank back up. No more flooding! But still really high fuel levels. I feel now I'm close enough to adjust them like your supposed to. Thanks again for the responds.

    Pop a top my friends.
    Cheers.

True, but if the floats do hang down too low, the needle WILL bind up in the seat. When that happens, the bowls will overflow. Ask me how I know this. Also happened to user Broberg in Sweden.
