Not sure just what you have. The on line fiches only show an XJ600 in 92 and 93 as the SECA II.

Those motorcycles have a single pick up coil which seems to indicate a computerized ignition system.

Look for a FJ600 (But the alternator/regulator are different!)

Corby - Pick up coils, not ignition coils. You definately have a TCI

I think TCI systems are powered by the battery where as CDI systems are powered by a charge coil at the flywheel. Most two stroke dirt bikes have CDI and street bikes have TCI.

I'm not an electronics guru but my impression is that a TCI is a more advanced system than a CDI. My guess is that a CDI requires some form of mechanical spark advance wherea TCI does not.

In 1990 Yamaha switched the Venture from a TCI to a Computer Controlled Ignition. I suspect that system allows more precise control of the advance curve and can be programmed differently for different applications. A TCI would require component changes for differing applications.

Since the Computer Controlled Ignition calculates the spark timing only one pick up coil is used (the earlier Ventures had 4).

The SECAII has only one pick up coil (Computer Controlled Ignition). My guess is that around 1990 Yamaha switched all their street motorcycles to Computer Controlled Ignition.

The Yamaha diagnostic procedure for the CCI is the same as for the TCI: Check everything else and if nothing else is defective replace the igniter.
