Okay, so I'll try to pick one of these up, they sound like a great idea and have had good reviews.....

So, the question I have is this: my bike is an '82 XJ650J which is being converted over to dual front discs off an '82-83 XJ750 model.

So do I use the telefix brace that is correct for the bike ('82 XJ650) or for the forks/tubes being used ('82-3 XJ750)?

    Or do I trial-and-error it....?

I'd go with the tubes you are using. Call the vender and ask what measurments would be needed to confirm the correct brace is ordered.

The Fork Brace thing is an Old issue..They were popular in the early 80's Makers and vendors of the things claimed all manner of benefit.
Many owners however found that they did little more than empty their wallets.
Basically these became regarded as 'fashion statements'... buy 'em purely for looks and you won't be dissapointed.
In truth.. IF.. you feel that yr forks need help then I would suggest installing a significantly larger diameter axle thru the fork and wheel.

Well, installing a significantly larger axle sounds like a significantly huge undertaking, one that I'm not going to be tackling anytime soon! Is there anyone who has actually used one that can comment on whether they provide any benefit or not, and in what conditions/situations? Thanks.

In everyday riding I can't tell if the fork brace makes any difference or not but it makes me feel more secure. They will make the forks more resistant to twisting but only if they fit tightly and not all of them do. Some models bolt over top the rubber boots at the top instead of directly to the metal, which probably make them worthless. If you like the look and want some added security for the front end then go for it, otherwise you will probably never notice any difference.
